History of the Fort St. John Hospital Auxiliary

Our history stems back to February 24, 1932 when the first meeting of the Hospital Auxiliary was held. Of the 17 ladies present, Mrs. C.M. Finch was elected President, Mr. J. Somon, Vice-President, and Mrs. J.H. Cummins, Secretary-Treasurer. During that year $400 was raised by the newly formed Auxiliary to assist with the operation of the local hospital. In 1953, the Auxiliary was able to purchase a badly needed washer and dryer.

In 1995 the Auxiliary became known as the FSJ General Hospital Auxiliary Society.

In 1999, A Memorial Garden was established in recognition of our past members. Through the continuing support of our community and volunteers, thousands of dollars has been raised to purchase the many needed pieces of equipment. Two of the fund raisers are a Spring Raffle and a Bake Sale to raise needed funds.

Services

The Auxiliary purchased televisions at $1,000 each, making it possible to rent them out at an affordable price.

Gift Shoppe

The Gift Shoppe is open weekdays between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It features a great selection of gift ideas, baby items, and confectionaries you’re sure to find something special.

Vending Machines

Owned and operated by the Auxiliary, are set up in the lobby for availability to everyone.

Memorial Fund

Donations may be made in memoriam of loved ones, with their name permanently inscribed on a plaque in the Hospital lobby. Proceeds support equipment purchased for the hospital.

Junior Volunteersjunvol3

The Junior volunteers program, founded in 1965, is open to all young adults between 13 and 18 years of age. The program runs from September to May, and consists of one to two hours per day at either the FSJ Hospital or Peace Lutheran Care Home. Registration packages are available at the high schools and Gift Shoppe.

The Fort St. John Auxiliary Hospital Society meetings are held the third Monday of the month in the Hospital Board Room at 7:30 p.m. between September and June. Anyone interested in devoting a little time towards the comfort and care of our patients can inquire at our Gift Shoppe. We certainly can use helping hands knitting, crocheting, baking, selling tickets, telephone duty, candy cart, Gift Shoppe workers or TV patrol.

Every penny earned is spent on hospital equipment, and every minute devoted to our cause is by volunteer only. Deep appreciation is extended to our devoted Auxilians for their endless hours given weekly. It’s not all work however, as every June we celebrate with a barbeque; gather for a Christmas social, and at our Annual General Meeting every February, spectacular dessert night is enjoyed by all.
