"Where Ever the Need is the Greatest" Fund

Our patients and their health care providers are always at the heart of our Foundation. For this reason most gifts will go to this fund and are used to support the purchase of equipment throughout the hospital including our Emergency Services, the Operating Rooms, Day Surgery, Med/Surg, ICU, Diagnostic Imaging, Community Cancer Centre, Rehabilitation Services, Pharmacy, Visiting Specialists Clinic, and Lab. The Foundation uses the funds where they are most beneficial to the patients of our hospital and where the impact will be the greatest. Often times there are small purchases that mean a great deal to patients and their families like a blanket warmer to provide warm, cozy blankets for our patients or a recliner that can be used if a parent needs to stay over in their child's room.
Our most important resource is our children and gifts to the Eastern Star Children's Fund are reserved for the purchase of medical equipment that benefits babies, children and our maternity patients. Our most recent purchases include 2 fetal heart monitors, 8 bassinettes, an incubator, pediatric cardio call monitor, and a pulse oximeter.
Did you know that The Fort St. John Hospital and Health Centre is the regional centre for kidney dialysis? The hospital provides services for individuals from all the surrounding communities including Tumbler Ridge, Chetwynd, Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson. Many of the patients are here two or three days a week with the typical procedure lasting from 6 to 8 hours. Donations to this fund go to support patient care needs in the unit. The most recent purchase has been an ice machine. Patients receiving dialysis are fluid restricted so must have ice chips to stay hydrated. We were happy to provide this vital piece of equipment for the patients. Next target purchase is for a radiant blanket warmer at an expected cost of $10,000.
With life comes the inevitable end that we all must face. A donation to this fund goes to support our palliative care patients at the hospital. Palliative care patients are nearing the end of their life and require the best of care to help make them comfortable. The Foundation purchases equipment and furniture that will help both the patient and their family be as comfortable as possible through this difficult time. Our most recent purchases includes two specialized mattresses that help to turn patients and prevent pressure sores, stacking chairs that can be pulled out when extended family arrive to visit, and a recliner for each of the rooms for both the patient's use and their families who may remain for the night.
Formed in February of 2009, this fund is used to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The Board of Directors felt that a proactive approach to raising funds would benefit our cancer patients by having funds available when a need is identified rather than waiting until funds have been raised to meet the identified needs. Already this fund has helped purchase some of the equipment need for the expansion of the Community Cancer Centre located in our hospital. Endowment FundsEndowment Funds give donors the opportunity to make a contribution that will ensure a continuous and secure source of future funding for our Foundation to provide critical medical equipment for our patients.
